Giving credit to self, not to our sovereign God

“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me."  John 6:38

"For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say?  'Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.' Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt." Romans 4:2-4


Worthless works
 

"I will expose your righteousness and your works, and they will not benefit you. I will declare your righteousness and your works, for they will not profit you. When you cry out, let your collection of idols deliver you." Isaiah 57:12-13

"Because they do not regard the works of the Lord,
Nor the operation of His hands,
He shall destroy them and not build them up." Psalm 28:5

"Indeed you are nothing, and your work is nothing;
He who chooses you is an abomination."  Isaiah 41:24

Looking to God and His Work

I meditate on all Your works;
I muse on the work of Your hands.
I spread out my hands to You;
My soul longs for You like a thirsty land.
Answer me speedily, O Lord...."  Psalm 143:5-7

Proverbs 16:4
The LORD works out everything for his own ends- even the wicked for a day of disaster.

He has shown his people the power of his works, giving them the lands of other nations.

Psalm 28:5
Since they show no regard for the works of the LORD and what his hands have done, he will tear them down and never build them up again.


Romans 9
31but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it. 32Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the "stumbling stone." 33As it is written:
"See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall,
and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."[1]
